Ford’s Mustang GTD had already recorded the fastest time for an American car around the Nürburgring, setting a 6:57.685 late last year.
Despite becoming the first American-made production car to break the seven-minute barrier around the circuit, a mixture of high temperatures and soggy conditions held the GTD back. Ford weren’t satisfied, believing there was more time to be found. On May 1, 2025, Ford came back better prepared and set a new lap time of 6:52.072, with the rear wheel drive powerhouse being roughly 5.5 seconds faster. The faster time wasn’t just the result of better weather. This time, the car had adjustments made to the drag reduction system, suspension, powertrain, traction control, ABS and minor changes to the aero package. Like the first attempt, factory driver Dirk Müller sat in the driver’s seat. The GTD is now the fourth fastest production sports car around the ‘Ring. The road-car production version of the Mustang GTD is set to be introduced by the middle of 2025, as it hits US showrooms at around $US300,000 ($A465,000). Ford has confirmed the GTD will only be made in left-hand drive and therefore won’t be available in Australia
